Faith: what is Christianity?

Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he lived as a man on Earth about 2,000 years ago. But Jesus is himself divine: he is one person of a three-person God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians believe the accounts in the Bible which say Jesus was miraculously conceived and lived for about 30 years before beginning three years of travelling around the Middle East, teaching about God and healing sick people. Christianity teaches that Jesus was betrayed, tried and convicted on false charges and executed by crucifixion but rose from the dead and reappeared to hundreds of people. He then ascended to heaven to be with God. In the future, there will be a time of judgement. After that those who have put their trust and faith in Jesus, will be with him in eternity.

Prayer

Prayer is easier than you may think. Prayer is speaking with God. It does not need fancy words or music. It just needs an open heart so that you can share whatever is on your mind with God.

What is Spirituality?

 spirituality-page-image

The concept of spirituality is difficult to define. Whilst some people, historically, may have linked spirituality with religion, it is in fact something that makes us human, whether or not we are religious.

“Spirituality is like a bird; if you hold it too tightly it chokes; if you hold it too loosely, it flies away.” Rabbi Hugo Gryn.

Each person is unique and therefore will experience spiritual encounter in different ways. Spiritual encounters may be visual, auditory and a sense of something ‘other’ – something ‘beyond the ordinary’. They can happen in both positive experiences of life but also at times of difficulty and despair. They can also happen in the everyday times in our lives. When we notice the spiritual opportunities of the everyday (the ‘NOWs’), and when we reflect upon or wonder about life’s ‘WOWs’ (things that are wonderful or awe-inspiring) and ‘OWs’ (things that challenge us or make us sad) we grow spiritually more aware.
