Christenings, Weddings and Funerals

One of the privileges of being the parish church is being called upon by members of the community to help them mark important life events.    For any of the following events please contact our Church Wardens, either Paul on 01494 465608 or Collis on 01494 530454.

Christenings

Usually called ‘baptism’ by Christians, this is an opportunity to commit a human life to God and make a good start at the beginning of the journey of faith. We baptise children and adults on a regular basis during our 11.00am Sunday family service. The service is rich with imagery and meaning with the pouring of water signifying the washing away of the past and the refreshment that comes from the Holy Spirit of God. The giving of a lighted candle symbolises Jesus the light of the world.

When children are baptised, they can have any number of godparents but we always advise that it is the suitability of an individual which really matters, rather than the overall number. Read more about baptism and becoming a godparent here. You don’t have to live in this parish to have your child baptised at St James’ but we do recommend that you consider having the service in the parish in which you are resident. To find your parish church, visit this website and enter your postcode.

We would love to be asked to baptise your child and give your whole family the opportunity to become part of the life of the church. If you would like to find out more, please ring either of our Church Wardens.  Please bear in mind that our hall next door may also be available for your baptism party. If you are or know of an adult who would like to be baptised, please ask about that also.

If you do some reading about baptism and feel it is not for you or your child just yet, why not consider coming to church one Sunday for the shorter and less official “Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child”?

One way or another, we hope you will want to approach us to help you celebrate God’s gift of new life. Congratulations and God bless you!
